This is the dramatic moment when a man who threatened to commit suicide by jumping off the Millennium Bridge was rescued. And today the courageous firefighter Khalid Obadele, who saved the man, shrugged off attempts to hail him a hero.Watched by a large crowd, the fireman edged out onto the supports of the bridge, which spans the Thames between St Paul's and Tate Modern, after a two-hour attempt to talk the man down failed. Mr Obadele managed to grab the man— described as Middle-Eastern — tie him to a safety rope and lower himself and the man into a waiting fireboat. One witness said: "It was very dramatic. But the firefighter didn't panic. He went straight out to him and pinned him down. The firefighter was a bit of a hero." Mr Obadele, who is based at Euston fire station, said modestly: "It was quite hairy." The alarm was raised at 2.44pm yesterday when the man climbed over the safety rails. He was later arrested for immigration offences.
