Tunnel to Towers Charity Run 2007
Paul Fox and Matt Smith from Euston take part in the Tunnel to Towers Run in New York
By Matt Smith.
Towards the end of 2006 myself and Wolfy toyed with the idea of a trip to New York to take part in a charity run called the Tunnel to Towers. This was in the memory of FF Steven Siller, and F.D.N.Y Firefighter who was driving home and heard about the 9/11 attack on his radio scanner. He turned around and drove to Brooklyn Battery Tunnel where he was stopped. He strapped his fire gear to his backhand ran to the scene of the World Trade Centre where along with 342 of his brothers was killed. The run was set up in his memory and proceeds go to several charities. For further info go to, the official website
Having decided to do the event we then left it for a year and it was not until two days before the event we booked flights, the hotel and entry into the event. We flew out on the 28th and spent two days exploring, drinking, signing on for the race, visiting fire houses for chats and coffee etc.
On Sunday the 30th at an obscene hour of the morning we made our way to ground zero where we were bussed to Brooklyn. We then spent a short time waiting and chatting to Fire-firefighters from across the States and further. We started our run and as we came out of the tunnels saw 343 F.D.N.Y Fire-fighters holding the stars and stripes flags. We made our way to the finish line with F.D.N.Y Ffs encouraging everyone. The end of the run was finished with speaches, food and beer, a good day.
For the remainder of our time in NY we spent shopping. We also visited Rescue 1, our equilivent rescue station in Manhatten.
